____________________________________________________________________ More historical information from Slough and Uxbridge - "The Home to Suters" for over half a century and Ledbury before that time..... Cine videos by Tony Suter of the rebuilding of Suters in Slough in early 1960s and installation of escalators at Suters Uxbridge This began in 1959 and was completed in 1962 costing hald a million £s according to Tom Suter. The building works began on the Wellington Street end in the old garden area and when this was completed the original Suters shops in the High Street were demolished. It is interesting to see the building techniques of the era. Not manch mechanical tools, a lot of the work carried out by hand amd not an era of hard hats for safety. The structure was built to hold an additional two floors if required at a future date. Woolworths History and Pictures - John Avery Uxbridge , Store 370 Woolworths . High Street , Uxbridge , Middlesex .. Here we have 2 photos of this Store from 1959 ... 1st Image shows the High Street Entrance and the 2nd image shows the Bakers Road Entrance (locally known as the Bus Station)... Whilst probably not Geographically my Local Store it was the Woolworths Store I spent most of my time in ... The Tea Bar / Cafe was through the back entrance down the Stairs and to the left ... Apparently under the Store there are several old wells and special bases had to be put around the bases of the Columns in order to distribute the weight evenly to prevent collapse .... I do hope Poundland (the current occupiers of the building) are aware of this fact. Source: Woolworths History and Pictures Facebook Public group Old Postcards from High Street Slough
